The Feast of Sant’Egidio Abate in Linguaglossa is celebrated on 1st September, the day on which at nightfall, at the end of the celebration of the Solemn Mass, the statue of the patron is carried in procession through the streets of the town which stops in the squares , where the blessing with the relic of Etna of the city and of the whole community takes place in memory of the miraculous events of 1923, the year in which it is said that Sant’Egidio saved Linguaglossa from the lava by blocking it with his stick.
In the days preceding the festival, the Committee for the celebrations of Sant’Egidio organizes numerous collateral events that entertain citizens and tourists for days.
